6) THE RIGHT DRINK

If your workouts are between 45 and 60 minutes, and you don't exercise daily, water is the best choice of fluid to stay hydrated. But if you do longer workouts or work up a sweat on a daily basis then use an isotonic sports drink. Isotonic means a fluid has the same concentration of sodium as blood, which helps promote its absorption, reduces the sodium lost through sweating and decreases the amount of water excreted. A study in the Journal Of Applied Physiology found recreational runners using an isotonic sports drink were able to go for 27 per cent longer before hitting fatigue than those drinking a placebo drink.

Taut, £1.15 per bottle, is a completely natural addition to the crowded sports-drink market. It doesn't contain salt, artificial flavours or sweeteners but tops up the body's glucose levels.

If you are sticking to water, don't re-use the same bottle. Some research suggests that potentially harmful components of the plastic, known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), may leach into the water once the bottle has been unsealed. Any sports bottle regularly re-used should be washed with detergent and hot water between uses, too - a Canadian study found evidence of bacterial contamination in over a third of re-used bottles. Taut is available at Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco.
