TOP TIPS
Lighting
Lighting generally consumes 10-15% of home electricity use, so it's worth taking advantage of natural sunlight, switching lights off whenever they're not needed and installing low-energy bulbs - they use only ¼ the energy of conventional bulbs and last up to 12 times longer.
Television
LCD screens are more efficient than traditional cathode ray TVs, but be wary of plasma screens, which use up to four times as much energy.
Heating
Enough heat is lost from UK homes through uninsulated lofts and cavity walls to heat over 10% of the country's homes and it's costly waste too: fitting loft insulation could save you up to £220 each year. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and save you around £40 each year.
Fridge
UK households use £1.6 billion worth of electricity every year on cooling and freezing food and drinks. Choose the smallest model to suit your daily needs, and keep it regularly defrosted. If everyone upgraded their fridges and freezers to Energy Saving Recommended ones, energy wastage would be cut by two thirds, saving nearly £900 million and the equivalent CO2 emissions of 600,000 homes.
Transport
Flying uses more energy than other forms of transport and emits huge amounts of CO2, so avoid it whenever possible. Choose leisure pursuits closer to home - walk and cycle there whenever you can, share lifts if you use a car and plan flight-free trips with the help of www.seat61.com.
Appliances
Getting everyone in the house into the habit of turning things off properly can save money as well as energy: £700 million worth of energy is wasted in the UK every year by people leaving appliances on standby.
Laundry
Always wait until you've got a full load before putting on a wash and try setting your machine to 30oC instead of a higher temperature to cut its energy use by up to 40%. Hang clothes out to dry whenever possible rather than using your tumble dryer, which use more power than any other appliance in the house.
In the garden
Patio heaters are very energy intensive, in just two hours belching out about as much CO2 as the average car does per day. Simple (or shared) gadgets go a long way in the garden, and try a good old fashioned hat and scarf to keep warm.
